sakura roadtrip on izu peninsula

A road trip through Japan's earliest sakura season

Small cylindrical wooden sauna with a rounded roof and glass door, set on a stone foundation beside water and surrounded by trees, rocks, and plants.

Izu is the perfect add-on to any Japan itinerary for those looking to slow down and enjoy beautiful nature. On the peninsula you will find charming ryokan stays, stunning views of Mt Fuji (weather permitting), and some surprisingly good secondhand shopping.

What makes winter and early spring especially special: Izu blooms earlier than anywhere else in Japan, with cherry blossoms concentrated in the southern part of the peninsula weeks before most other popular destinations.

Just 30 minutes from Tokyo by Shinkansen to Atami, the region works beautifully as an overnight ryokan escape or a multi-day road trip, which is exactly what we did.
